e.l.f. Essential Brush Set Review - November 2015
Friday, December 04, 2015
Hey everyone. Today I thought I would do a quick review of the e.l.f. Essential 6 Piece Brush Set - this is available online for £12.50 but I actually picked mine up at TK Maxx for the same price (possibly slightly less, the receipt has disappeared in to the ether). So, we know it's a great price point but is it good value or just a cheap imitation?
The brushes all have sleek, matte black handles - simple but elegant. They're very lightweight - there's definitely not the same tactile quality as other brands like Real Techniques but if they work then I can look past it.
The most disappointing brush is definitely the bronzing/angled contour brush - this just feels the cheapest and the bristles are not good quality. There's no bristle fall out but it's just not soft or fluffy enough for me to enjoy using it. It does work, technically, but I don't enjoy using it and for such a key part of my make up routine, I'm happy to pay for quality.
I love that it comes with a brow wand/spoolie - I don't have a long handled spoolie in my collection and it's so much easier than using the many tiny ones I own/can never find. Side note - if anybody knows where the word 'spoolie' came from, let me know, I need this information.
The other brushes are all decent in my opinion. The eyeshadow brush is by no means the best I own but it's usable and picks up product well. The sponge smudger is probably not something I will use very often but it's nice to add one to my collection and it does work very well at smoking out eyeliner quickly and evenly.
The eyeliner brush is a sturdy flat top brush - I'm not sure how this would work with a gel eyeliner but I've used this with brow powder and for doing a soft wing with eye shadow and it's a great option. It's definitely my new go-to brow brush - precise enough without being harsh or rough.
The concealer brush is teeny tiny and I have no idea how it's a concealer brush BUT this was pretty much the reason I bought this set because I have been wanting a small detail brush for my lower lash line. It's definitely a good size and works more like a pencil brush. I've not seen many budget brushes which fill this role so I think it's quite a rare find.
With the set you also get a Daily Brush Cleaner solution (daily? are we meant to clean them every day? Not, like, once a year...). This works SO well. I'm really impressed with this product - it is so quick and so easy and it really works. You just spray your brushes, wipe them on a cloth or tissue and then set them down to dry. Not that they're dripping wet, they don't take long to dry at all. Gone are my days of soaking my entire brush collection in the sink and just hoping they dry in time for morning. I know I'm late to the party but my word, I love a time saver!
Overall, these brushes are definitely not in the same league as Real Techniques, Sigma or even some of Boots/Superdrug own brand. However, for the price, I personally am very glad I picked this set up. All of the brushes bar the angled bronzing brush work well - not the most luxurious but they do work - and the set offers some brushes rarely included in an 'essentials' set. Definitely a good opportunity to pick up a range of brush types without the price tag.
What are your favourite brushes on a budget?

I'm always going to be a Real Technique girl at heart! I do love the idea of a long spoolie though - I too only have short ones!

I don't regret buying them but they're definitely not the same quality as Real Techniques - some times it's just worth spending a little more! x
